UW Judo

Located in the heart of the city and country, the University of Winnipeg harbors a strong sense of community and family. This trait transforms the individual sport of Judo into the team sport of Judo, with a strong support network experienced from the Club, the University, the community, and the city. This engenders a positive sport environment which allows all to bring the best out of each other, pushing beyond our limits.

The University of Winnipeg Judo club has recently enjoyed the input of Sensei Hoon Chung, Olympic Gold medalist (KOR). As a Ph.D. and University Professor in South Korea, teaching classes in theoretical
and practical Judo, all judoka were able to benefit from the elite professionalism and academic excellence brought to our Club. Shown here during a practice session, Sensei Chung introduced his classical school of Judo; with its simplicity in application, and minimal use of strength. Throughout the year, he emphasized the style of ippon Judo in keeping with the current Japanese philosophy and tradition.

Profiting from the academic exchange program featured at the University of Winnipeg, the Club is regularly exposed to judokas from around the world. Shown here during a practice session, lightweight Japanese National judoka and black belt Tatsumi displays his control of balance and direction against heavyweight Mark Merrithew. Drawing from international training components, including the Japanese, Korean, French, German and Cuban schools, the Club is rapidly establishing itself as a powerhouse in the Judo community.

We vary from white to black belts, and come from many diverse backgrounds. Despite our differences, the goal and direction of the Club is one; A TEAM WITH ONE HEART.
